Deep Ellum Neighborhood
Deep Ellum is a part of Dallas, TX that is known for being an arts and entertainment hub. It is not very far from the downtown area of the city, yet stepping into this neighborhood is like entering a whole new world. It was originally called Deep Elm, but the way that residents pronounced this resulted in the mane being changed.
This area was the first place in the city that served as a commercial district for European immigrants and Black Americans. Many of the storefronts from the earlier part of the 20th century are still there. While some of them are now housing different businesses than they were then, the structural integrity has often remained the same.
At one point, many people were hesitant to spend time in this area because it was said to be a place that had a very high level of crime. The fact that many businesses shut their doors between 2001 and 2006 did not help dispel these rumors. Since an upswing of new bars, clubs, and venues opened their doors in the past decade, the area has become very popular and is now considered one of the best places to spend time in the city.
